Long-Term Running Goals:

After my mission (tentatively June 2017-June 2019), which will be two years of virtually no running, I want to build my fitness back up stronger than it ever was before. Then when I think I am ready I may attempt for a spot on the USU roster again. We'll see how long I have to do that based on age and eligibility and stuff. If I don't ever do it that's fine, I'll still have a lot of fun with running. Some times I want to beat someday:

15:30 5K

1:10 HM

2:40 Marathon

I have a fantasy in my mind of really breaking through in the marathon and making the olympic trials but we'll see about that haha. That would honestly be a dream come true. I definitely want to run the Boston Marathon at least once. Also maybe when I'm old but not too old I might try a 100 miler to qualify for Western States.

Personal:

Freshman at Utah State University. I still have not chosen a major. Just graduated from Logan High School in May 2016. One thing I enjoy aside from running is music, weather it's playing or listening. I am member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and plan on serving a two-year mission after two semesters of school.

Sucky run haha. I ran to the river trail then headed to the high school and did a few continous 200s on the track. It was dark by the end. 7:02 ap.

Pretty good run with Ben Smith in the morning. Met him at Lundstrom and we headed up 1600 E then toward Green Canyon, then south on the Shoreline trail which was awesome, then up the Highline Trail and back down the canyon on Stokes which was very snowy. Then up the highway and back through the nerighborhood. We had some good convo. It was also pretty cold. 7:16 ap.

Great run this am! Was supposed to be 15 but ended up being a mile longer due to some errors in my route. Go check it out on strava I guess https://www.strava.com/activities/792589737 but if you're too lazy it was a giant lolly pop looking thing with center and main in the middle. 4 rings big. Wasn't feeling that great at the beginning but started to feel the flow and the endorphins after like mile 8, plus this was when I realized I needed to book it to get home in time. SO I did the second half at about 6:30 ap, not too shabby. Also my longest run EVER, and it was done right in town, which wasn't too bad, it honestly would have been worse as a plain out and back, this mixed it up a bit. 6:47 ap.

AM: Did a run after class from Ryan's Place. I actually dropped down to the windy north/south road that goes into Providence, took that till it ended then headed up center street and eventually to Eck Hill, possibly the steepest bit of road in the whole valley (probably actually). I prepped myself then did a "sprint" up it, although I felt like I was crawling on the steepest part. Ended up with a 2nd place ranking on the leaderboard, darn you Hayden Ewer, I hope you destroyed yourself getting that CR haha. Then jogged back to my car for 6 miles.

PM: Drove up to the ARC for some running and lifting after work. Ran three miles on the treadmill which felt really good actually, then did various standard lifts that I usually do, then did some running on the track with an attempt at a big ten, but the benching I did had completely drained my arms and could NOT do pushups by about 7. 3.5 miles total.

Parked by the XC course for a workout in North Logan at around three. This happened to be the same time as track practice. The workout was one mile easy, then 5 miles at a moderate pace, then a mile jog and another moderate 3. Well a mile and a half into the run, the "big boys" who had been running behind me trying to catch me came up behind me and I just hitched for the ride and talked to them a bit. They were actually going at 6:20 pace (these were the varsity dudes including Dillon Maggard who took 12th at XC Nats, such a stud) which was a bit faster than the moderate pace I was gonna do but I took the opportunity to run with them and just cut it to 4 miles. Funny guys haha. After 4 miles I dropped off the pace and took a left, and jogged a mile which brought me almost back to the course, so I dropped down to that and finished up on that at the same pace as before. Felt okay, but it was really cold. We'll call it half marathon pace for this workout. Was consistantly within 5 seconds of 6:20 the whole time, they are really good at pacing, and somehown I did the same thing alone. 6:42 ap.

After the cooldown I got in my car and started to feel shaky and weak. It got worse as I drove and when I got home I got into bed as fast as I could, I was not feeling it.

Well, I woke up and had a headache, along with that I had chills and my whole body was achy and fatigued. I still thought it would be a good idea too run, I thought I would feel better if I did... haha nope. Ran from one of the blue parking lots down the highway towards the canyon. As soon as I started I knew it would not be a good run. After running down the hill I stopped my watch and slowly walked up the Bonneville switchbacks to the high line trail and kept going from there, very slow, probably 9 minute pace. Turned around when I hit Stokes and I had stopped maybe 5 times at this point for 5 minutes each time, still going at a snails pace. Hit the hill and tried to suck it up and I only had to stop and walk once going up. Tried to hold on till the parking lot without stopping from there.

Just an absolutely terrible experience that probably shouldn't have happened. Would rate this as the worst run of 2016. 8:34 ap which was faster than I expected but nothing close to what it would be on normal day. Got homea and didn't take any gear, just went upstairs, crashed on my bed, and slept for 4 hours. Took the rest of the week off from running.

This was a weird run. The pace wasn't all that slow but everything felt off. My leg mucles felt like paper mache (hollow) but heavy at the same time. Also my form was probably terrible. The only ting that made it okay was that it was sort of nice ourside and I was listening to J. Cole's dope new album 4 Your Eyez Only, which probably contributed to the faster pace (7:24). I did the river trail loop. Just weird.

Treadmill run today. Started at 8:00/mi and workout my way down to 7:00/mi decreasing about 15 sec/mi every mile, so 5 miles. I was dying by the end. Was planning on going all the way down to 6:15 but that was NOT happening. Thought I could still go all the way to 6:30 (8 miles) at mile 4, but I was really dying at 7 minute pace so I cut it off there and did a gruelling 2 mile cooldown at 8:30 pace. Something is really wrong with my fitness. Just a depressing "workout".

AM: Morning 6.3. Was not good. Ran down 10th west to Icon then headed west on the river trail and eventually into the sticks where I looped back home. Pace was a hard earned 7:58 ap. It was kind of snowy on the sidewalk but where it really sucked was on the country roads, I just felt so slow, maybe it wasn't a good day I don't know but this just really sucked. If every run in the near future is going to be like this it will be MUCH harder to get myself out the door.

PM: Headed to the ARC after work at night. Did 3 miles of running on the upstairs track which really sucked (I could see myself in the window reflection every lap and I did not like what I saw mechanics wise, I looked like an old man). Between every mile I went downstairs and did a lift, those didn't feel good either. Just didn't feel good.

This was an okay run. Ran from Old Maine after my math final. Took it easy the whole time except for the very end. Headed up the hill then down the other hill by the Spectrum and hit up the XC course which was covered with snow, still ran on it anyways, then took a long bathroom break at the agriculture building next to the course. Then I headed up the 12th E hill which sucked then down the high way and back on the canal trail. I got down to the low 7 pace in the last couple miles, which if this was a couple weeks ago that would've been low 6s, but I felt good not sucky at the end, which is an improvement. 7:52 ap.

Slept in, the weather got bad, then had to run some errands and go to work, and of course the weather got good when I couldn't run. So no run today. Wasn't very motivated to do it anyway.

"Long run" today. Was actually planning on doing 12, but I slept in a bit and only had an hour to run before going to see Rogue One, and with traffic lights and stuff and me being slow I only was able to get 6 in in that hour. 7:30 ap because I was pushing on the way back.

Well, I'm back! Had a posting hiatus since Thanksgivng but I just sat down and posted all my entries since then (had nothing to do). As you can see, I got sick, which in turn made me slow. Working on addressing that now haha. Afternoon run today hitting up the entire river trail. Was supposed to be an 8 mile route but it turned up short and I was too lazy to finish it. It was VERY cold. Don't know what the pace was because I didn't look at it during the run and accidentally deleted it before upload but probably mid to high 7s :(. Honestly felt okay today, I just need to get used to the distance again. I'm going to try and get in 8 miles every day this week with a 12 mile long run. It'll be hard but it'll only be 52 miles compared to the 60 I was doing before.

AM: Went for a run on the deer fence around lunch time. I am terribly out of shape for those hills and the run sucked but it was good to get on a trail I guess. 8:20 ap.

PM: Had a nice 3.5 miles of running at like 9:30. Ben was supposed to meet me at my house but he never found it, but by coincidence I ran into him about a half mile east of home, so he ran with me to Willow Park and we did some strides, then we ran back to my house and I gave him a ride home. 7:11 ap.

AM; Had a terrible four mile run out west of my house, just was not feeling it and voluntarily stopped like five times. It'll get better I know it. Decent pace though I guess. 7:26 ap. Haha just remembered, not even a half mile into it I tried to step onto a sidewalk and tripped on the curb, fell down and did a full roll on purpose to reduce the impact. It was pretty funny if anyone saw it, but I think I'm in the clear.

PM: Four miles after work from Merlin-Olsen to the canal trail. Felt decent. Started with like an 8:26 mile but the rest were all around 7:30. 7:47 ap.

PM: Five miler after work from Merlin Olsen, this time mostly in River Heights. Had some hills in there too. 7:37 ap.

Frantic, pushed 6 miler before work. Pace was only 7:02 average but it felt like 6:02 pace pre-sickness. Ran up center street and turned around at 2.5 for some reason, then adden on another mile on the back road.

Slept in, had work at 11, was not able to run. Should have organized a crazy midnight run with someone like Riley Cook and friends did haha. So crap mileage for this week but I'll get it up. I might even just go all in and try for 60 next week. If I do I'll probably try and keep it consistent and do like 10 miles a day in a mix of singles and doubles.

P.S. It's official, just signed up for the Ogden Marathon, also ordered a Garmin Forunner 630 so theres a couple forms of new motivation I guess.

Great run, hopefully indicating this week will be a good week :) After seeing Fantastic Beasts (finally!) I geared up for the cold and headed out with Tchaikovsky playin in my ears (don't usually listen to classical music except for when studying but I think I might add running to that list). It went great with all the snow coating everything. Just went super easy, didn't look at pace. Was planning on turning around 30 min out but I was almost to First Dam at that point so I just turned around at the mouth of the canyon (beautiful scenery up there by the pond). Just went back the same way and kept it chill. Pretty much stayed off the sidewalks because of how icy they were; the roads were much better. I just had to watch out for cars and kept switching sides haha. Ended in the low 7s for pace and the average was an effortless 7:30, really good sign. I wasn't quite at nine when I got home so I added on. Felt like I could have gone another 9. I think I really will try and go 60 this week, relatively evenly with a 13 mile long run. I'll probably double a few days.
